Problem

With over 120 million unique visitors a month and 230 million web requests a day, trivago needed clear visibility on user experience performance in a continually changing environment. People increasingly expect to get an instant answer when they make very personalized searches on trivago sites, so trivago needs to deliver a successful answer to a search for the ideal hotel at best price as fast as possible.

Therefore, performance observability is an essential element of trivago’s business culture. It helps the organization continually improve the speed of its response.

In addition to observing how users interact with its services, trivago also needed to be able to deep dive into how its applications and hardware were performing to identify bottlenecks or issues with capacity and transaction flows. trivago teams also needed to assess how new software releases might perform in both the back-end and front-end, enabling code to be reviewed and improved.

Faster response to customers is vital and trivago thrives on how it can analyze and extract performance insights from digital experience data collected globally from its sites and systems in real time. trivago had used monitoring tools for some time, but it realized a new solution was required that could provide more powerful and deeper insights into how its multiple services were performing in the many countries where trivago is popular.

Catchpoint digital experience observability was a natural choice because of its industry leading global network of observability nodes. In addition, the business selected Catchpoint because of its invaluable business insights into how well or not trivago is meeting its targets to be the fastest hotel search site for travelers globally.

Solution

"My job is to make trivago products faster for customers accessing our services anywhere on the globe. You can only improve what you can measure and digital end-user perspective observability and analytics from Catchpoint is an important piece to how we improve performance. Using Catchpoint's global observability nodes, we are assured of full visibility of how our services and systems are really delivering hotel search services internationally," said Xoan Vilas, Performance Lead, trivago.

A range of trivago teams use Catchpoint, including DevOps, Quality Assurance, and specific product owners. They are using the tools within the Catchpoint platform in a variety of ways:

  • Measuring product performance against sets of specific metrics
  • Providing an independent perspective of how trivago platforms perform outside of the datacenters
  • Giving a snapshot of the health of a platform.

With its analytics capabilities used to drill down and hunt out issues within back-end or front-end systems, Catchpoint functions as both a performance visibility tool and a diagnostics tool.

Results

As trivago has developed and grown its services globally, Catchpoint tools have helped them along the way.

China presents a huge opportunity and challenge for trivago. The Chinese have overtaken the Americans as the world’s top spenders on international travel. However, serving the Chinese market with online services is complicated by the country’s Internet access controls and developing infrastructure.

In setting up its Chinese platform, Catchpoint was an invaluable tool in observing the quality of a dedicated private network link between trivago datacenters and the performance of local content delivery networks and third-party applications.

Other technical challenges have been helped by using Catchpoint to assess impacts on performance, such as making the transition to https. trivago benefits from how Catchpoint can quickly confirm slow servers within a datacenter, performance issues with an ISP or CDN anywhere in the world, and which third-party apps are impairing the experience for customers.

As a global travel business, trivago knows it loses business from its consumers and its clients – the hoteliers – if its services aren’t fast enough in delivering highly personalized recommendations and bookings. Catchpoint gives the business invaluable insights into how well or not it is meeting its targets to be the fastest hotel search site for travelers globally.
